ASRT, Inc. provides scientific, information management, management consulting, bioinformatics, and administrative program support to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other Federal and private sector clients. The successful candidate will be a full-time employee of ASRT, Inc., and will be assigned to the CDC, located at 1600 Clifton Road, Atlanta, GA, to provide bioinformatics support.

SCOPE OF WORK

The Bioinformatician will provide scientific support services for laboratory and bioinformatics to a Branch within CDC.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform quality control, assembly, annotation and analysis of microbial genome sequences.
  • Consult with internal and external partners on genomic project planning and management.
  • Manage genome sequence files and databases, including uploads to NCBI or other similar sequence data banks.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of tools and reference databases for genomic analysis of clinical, animal, and environmental samples.
  • Develop WGS and wgMLST tools for waterborne pathogens.
  • Assist with developing standard operating procedures for bioinformatics analyses.
  • Prepare and deliver clear, concise, and accurate reports, presentations, and scientific manuscripts.
  • Utilize knowledge in software and programming applications, like, Python, R, Bowtie2, and similar laboratory programs.
  • Travel to present scientific findings at annual scientific meetings and conferences as assigned by the Principal Investigator or to assist with training or responses.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • Master's degree in bioinformatics, or Master's degree in microbiology, biology, chemistry, computer science, computational biology mathematics or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and at least 24 semester hours in mathematics, statistics, bioinformatics, or informatics.

Required:

  • Strong quantitative skills, including proficiency in SAS/R; Epi Info, Microsoft Access or other relational database management systems; and other Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong communication skills, including experience developing communication tools such as newsletters, presentations, and other written products.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills and the ability to comfortably multi-task.
  • Excellent skills for preparing written documents and giving oral presentations.
  • At least 2-3 years of prior experience investigating outbreaks; past experience working with staff in domestic or international health agencies is preferred.
  • Knowledge in software and programming applications, like, Python, R, Bowtie2, and similar laboratory programs.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Desirable:

  • Experience working with a diverse interdisciplinary team.

Language Skills:

  • The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
