ASRT, Inc. provides scientific, information management, management consulting, bioinformatics, and administrative program support to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other Federal and private sector clients The successful candidate will be a full-time employee of ASRT, Inc. and will be assigned to the Mycotic Diseases Branch (MDB), Division of Foodborne, Waterborne, and Environmental Diseases (DFWED), National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID), at the CDC, 1600 Clifton Road, Atlanta, GA, to provide laboratory support.

SCOPE OF WORK

The Microbiologist will provide technical knowledge for the MDB laboratory to support the fungal projects.


MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performing conventional and molecular identification of fungi from primary isolates, environmental samples, and body fluid.
  • Developing CLIA Standard Operations procedures and Quality Management procedures.
  • Developing and coordinating national and international training courses and technical assistance globally.
  • Maintaining electronic databases of stock culture collection and update laboratory results by performing data entry.
  • Reviewing and contributing content for existing mold course slide collection for appearance of appropriate structures and determining slides to be replaced. Taking photographs of mold diagnostic structure for the identification course.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:


  • Bachelor's or master's degree in Microbiology, Medical Technology, or Biology

Required:

  • Experience with standard molecular, microbiological, and immunological techniques.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience documenting daily work with good laboratory practice compliance.
  • Experience writing project reports, research protocols and manuscripts.
  • Ability to work and build coalitions with partners involved and develop strategies to effectively convey information to partners.
  • Knowledge and experience working with infectious agents in various laboratory settings.
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to efficiently organize multiple priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills required for teamwork and extensive interaction with people across CDC and with external partners.
  • Ability to work independently and yet to maintain the flexibility to respond to requests for support of ongoing projects.
  • Familiarity with CLIA and Quality Management requirements.
  • Familiarity with fungal names and methods for detecting and identifying fungi in clinical specimens.
  • Knowledge of antifungal testing methodologies.
  • Experience with diagnostic laboratory methods.
  • Strong computer skills.

Desirable:

  • Advanced degree in a scientific discipline.
  • Experience with conventional and real-time PCR assays.
  • Expertise in microbiology and molecular biology, and the design, development and performance of molecular diagnostic tests.
  • Experience with the development and evaluation and optimization of in vitro diagnostic assays, including immunoassays.
  • Proficiency with standard molecular, microbiological, and immunological techniques, including, but not limited to, ELISA, PCR, qPCR, DNA/RNA isolation, and cloning.
  • Experience working in a similar capacity in a Public Health setting.

Language Skills:

  • The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
